A landmark early side-scrolling beat 'em up developed and published by Jaleco, Rushing Beat (ラッシング・ビート - localized in the West as Rival Turf!) launched in Japan in March 1992 for the Super Famicom. The foundational first chapter of a revered 16-bit brawler trilogy, the game stood out in the early console generation for its gritty 1990s urban aesthetic, seamless two-player simultaneous cooperative action, and the debut of an innovative rage mechanic.
Key Game Features
-
Taking Back Neo Cisco: The urban sprawl of Neo Cisco has been overrun by a ruthless criminal syndicate known as "Jaded". With standard law enforcement compromised, two vigilantes hit the asphalt to dismantle the syndicate:
-
Norton (Jack Flak): A disciplined martial artist and detective boasting quick striking speed and versatile kick strings.
-
Bild (Oozie Nelson): A hulking police enforcement veteran relying on raw power, clotheslines, and crushing grappling throws.
-
-
Six Gritty Urban Stages: Fight through classic beat 'em up locales including trash-strewn back alleys, cargo shipping docks, speeding commuter trains, rooftops, industrial construction zones, and the syndicate boss's private stronghold.
-
Full Two-Player Cooperative Play: Jump into side-scrolling brawling side-by-side with a friend, coordinating crowd control against waves of street thugs, ninja operatives, and heavy grapplers.
Combat Systems & Gameplay Highlights
-
The "Ikari" (Rage) Mode Innovation: One of Jaleco's finest contributions to the brawler genre: taking severe damage fills a hidden threshold that triggers a temporary berserk state, granting brief invincibility alongside dramatically heightened speed and attack damage to turn the tide of battle.
-

-
Dedicated 2-Player Versus Mode: Beyond the core campaign, players can select fighters and battle each other directly in a competitive 1-on-1 sparring mode.
-
Hard-Hitting 16-Bit Audio: Features an aggressive synth-driven soundtrack and crunchy hit effects rendered through the Super Famicom's SPC700 audio hardware.
